We set out on one of the most enjoyable day trips from Hamilton, driving to the calm surf town of Raglan. Just 30 minutes from Hamilton (or two hours from Auckland), it promised a perfect getaway filled with beach vibes, stunning landscapes, and a spirit of adventure. We planned to stop at the breathtaking Bridal Veil Falls on the way back, making this trip even more memorable. Here’s how the day unfolded.
Setting Off Towards Raglan
We made sure to leave early in the day as anyone who has road tripped with small children knows you may need to make some (many) stops. After packing ALL the snacks for the kids and coffee for the MR and I we set out. The journey to Raglan is visually delightful, with charming towns, vibrant farmland, and rolling hills of green that define this region of New Zealand.
Snacks are vital to any successful roadtrip with kids and we usually listen to a mixture of kids songs, podcasts, audio books or our trusty yoto mini that we take everywhere.
While the MR drove, I basically had my camera out recording or snapping photos constantly. New Zealand is arguably one of the most picturesque countries for roadtripping. This drive is truly stunning.

Enjoying Local Delights
For our first stop we ventured into the heart of Raglan to check out local cafes and shops. We all needed a little pick me up after two hours in the car. We checked out INDI's for some coffee as it had a cute little courtyard. They offer Morning Glory coffee, which is a local coffee roaster and we couldn’t resist stopping for a much-needed caffeine boost.

Raglan also boasts a variety of unique boutiques. We loved exploring local art galleries showcasing talented regional artists. If you appreciate handmade crafts or are hunting for quirky souvenirs, you will find plenty to take home from this artistic corner of New Zealand.
Exploring Raglan's Beaches
No trip to Raglan is complete without spending time at Ngarunui Beach. This black-sand beach is both scenic and family-friendly. Pack your swimwear, sunscreen, and beach toys, and let the kids enjoy the waves and sand.

A Scenic Drive to Bridal Veil Falls
After the beach we headed to Bridal Veil Falls, located just 30 minutes from Raglan. The drive to the falls was another stunning journey through lush green landscapes and charming rural settings.
Bridal Veil Falls is a true spectacle. The falls plunge over 55 meters, creating a breathtaking view that captivates every visitor. The soothing sound of water cascading down the rocks was the perfect way to end an exhilarating day.

The walk to the viewing platform is easy and suitable for all ages, making it an excellent choice for families. You can also hike to the bottom of the falls, this was not as easy; however, we all managed the trek, all 261 steps! We definitely took our time but it allowed us to enjoy the view!

Reflecting on the Day
Standing at the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls, I couldn’t help but reflect on our day trip to Raglan. It was a delightful mix of beach activities, local culture in town, and a stunning scenic hike. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences and memories created.
Whether you are a local or visiting New Zealand for the first time, this trip highlights the best of what Aotearoa has to offer. With its engaging beach activities and magnificent waterfalls, Raglan truly embodies the spirit of adventure.
Your Next Adventure Awaits
A day trip to Raglan is a wonderful choice for anyone seeking a quick escape. With endless activities to keep you entertained, it’s the perfect destination for families, solo travelers, and friends alike. Don’t forget to stop by Bridal Veil Falls on your way back for a breathtaking visual experience.
I encourage you to plan your adventure soon! Gather your loved ones, pack some snacks, and remember your camera. Aotearoa has many hidden gems waiting for you to explore, and who knows what wonders you will discover along the way? Happy travels!
